Winter weather will make for hazardous travel conditions in many parts of Oregon, Feb. 29

Wind, rain and heavy mountain snow will continue through the weekend and bring the threat of slides and road debris – ODOT release – A new round of winter storms hits Oregon this week as ODOT crews work to make the roads safe. High winds, snow and heavy rains will make travel hazardous in many corners of the state. The road surface is just one concern during winter storms. High winds and precipitation often cause debris such as trees and rocks to fall into the road. In the mountains and high elevation areas, heavy snow and high winds can create whiteout conditions, severely limiting visibility. Stay aware and be prepared for delays and closures. Travelers should consult Tripcheck.com and check weather forecasts on their planned routes. Tripcheck.com provides live cameras showing road conditions around the state, along with other information that can help travel planning including, in many cases, altitude and temperature. If you must travel in winter weather, be prepared. Pack your vehicle with the essentials: tire chains, snacks, water, medications and warm clothing. Fill up your vehicle’s fuel tank and fully charge its battery. Plan your route ahead, and if you’re following GPS navigation, make sure it sticks to main roads because many rural roads are not maintained in severe weather and can be very treacherous. If you’re walking or rolling to your destination, watch for lingering ice on sidewalks. Public transit is another option, but the winter weather may cause schedule changes, so check before you head out. For folks on bikes, road shoulders and bike lanes may be extra slushy in some areas so be careful. For more winter weather driving tips, see our winter travel tips.
