Get ready to journey under the sea at your local library this summer! During July libraries across Coos County will host a program developed by the Museum of Natural and Cultural History. Participants will dive into an ocean of hands-on science fun while exploring Oregon’s underwater environments. All events are free and open to children and families. Lewis Library, 511 3rd Avenue, Powers; 6:00pm, Wednesday, July 10, Dora Public Library, 56125 Goldbrick Rd., Myrtle Point; 11:30am, Friday, July 12, Bandon Public Library, 1204 11th Street SW, Bandon; 3:30pm, Friday, July 12, Coquille Public Library, 105 N. Birch Street, Coquille; 10:00am, Saturday, July 13, Coos Bay Public Library, 525 Anderson, Coos Bay; 2:00pm, Saturday, July 13, North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Avenue, North Bend; 2:00pm, Saturday, July 27, Lakeside Public Library, 915 N. Lake Rd., Lakeside. Located on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, the Museum of Natural and Cultural History enhances knowledge of Earth’s environments and cultures, inspiring stewardship of our collective past, present, and future. The museum welcomes more than 30,000 visitors annually and serves another 20,000 Oregonians through its statewide outreach programs. A winner of the 2018 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the museum is fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, distinguishing it as one of the very best museums in the nation. Journey Under the Sea programs in Coos County are made possible by the Coos County Library Service District and are being offered to support out-of-school learning for young people during the summer as part of a nationwide Summer Reading Program. The annual initiative is offered to encourage young people and families to read during the summer months. Libraries throughout Coos County coordinate a challenge and programming tailored to local community needs.
