Needing a win to keep their state playoff chances alive, the Marshfield Pirates upset No. 7 Mazama 26-20 in prep football Friday night at Pete Susick Stadium, Coos Bay. Marshfield moves into a tie with the Vikings for second place in the 4A Special District 4 behind league champion Henley (6-0, 9-0). The Pirates earned a First Round playoff date Friday, Nov. 3rd, 7 p.m., at La Salle Prep, Milwaukee. The No. 1 ranked Hornets won at North Bend 41-28 to complete an unbeaten regular season. The Bulldogs (3-3-, 7-3) fall into a tie for fourth with Ashland (3-3, 6-3), but the Grizzlies get the playoff nod by virtue of their earlier win over North Bend. In 3A – Siuslaw beat visiting Pleasant Hill 51-7 at Florence, and Coquille won at St. Mary’s Medford 42-16. Siuslaw (4-2, 5-4) finishes third in the Mtn. Valley Conference and will play at Dayton (9-0) Nov. 3rd. Coquille (5-4, 5-4) is fifth in Special District 3. In 2A – Gold Beach lost at Oakland 32-20, but the Panthers made the playoffs and will host Blanchet Catholic (6-3) (Salem) on Nov. 3rd. Bandon/Pacific (6-3) will play at Heppner (7-2) Nov. 3rd. In other games, Reedsport beat visiting North Douglas/Yoncalla 38-34. Oakland (7-0, 8-1) wins Special District 3, and Gold Beach (6-1, 7-2) is second. Reedsport (2-5, 3-6) is seventh. In 1A8 – Myrtle Pt. (4-1, 7-1) won at Camas Valley 52-18. The Bobcats are second in Special District 1, but has a bye from the first round and will host the winner of the Camas Valley at Adrian (6-3) game on Nov. 10th. Lost River (5-0, 8-0) finished as the league champion, with Camas Valley (2-3, 4-3) third. Powers gained a bye in 1A6 from the First Round. The Cruisers will host the winner of the Echo (5-3) at Alsea (8-2) First Round game, Nov. 10th.

Both Marshfield and North Bend “punched their tickets” to the OSAA 4A State Volleyball Championships with First Round playoff wins at home Saturday. The two Bay Area prep teams each swept their visiting opponents. North Bend went first and sent Astoria back up the Coast with a 3-0 decision. Next was Marshfield and the top-ranked Lady Pirates did the same to La Grande, 3-0. The two will now play in the eight-team state tournament Nov. 3rd & 4th at Springfield HS. They’ll be side-by-side in their first matches at 1:15 p.m., Friday. Marshfield (25-3) playing The Dalles (14-8) on Court 1, and North Bend (17-6) taking on Cascade (19-3) on Court 2. In the 2A playoffs – Bandon (16-11) lost at Salem Academy 3-0 Saturday.

Marshfield’s boys lost 4-1 in a 4A “Play-In” round prep soccer match at Estacada Saturday. The Pirates end the season 5-10-1. First round state playoff matches begin Nov. 1st. In 3A/2A/1A playoffs, Brookings-Harbor advanced to the first round with a 2-1 win over visiting Santiam Christian Saturday. The Bruins (12-3) will play at McLoughlin (14-0-1), Milton-Freewater on Nov. 1st. Siuslaw lost at Dayton 5-2 Saturday ending the Vikings (10-4-1) season. Pacific/Bandon (13-1) will host Riverside (9-5) on Nov. 1st, 3 p.m. In girl’s prep soccer, 3A/2A/1A – Brookings-Harbor beat visiting McLoughlin 3-1 Saturday. The Bruins (9-4-2) will play at Catlin Gabel (12-1-2) (Portland) on Oct. 31st, 2 p.m. North Bend’s girls (9-4-1) will travel to La Grande (9-3-1) Oct. 31st to play the Tigers in a 4A First Round playoff at Eastern Oregon University, 1 p.m.
