Prep Spring Practice Begins
Monday, Feb. 26, 2024 is the first day the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) allows its member schools to start Spring practice in baseball, softball, tennis, golf, & track & field. The first allowable day for contests or jamborees is March 11th.

Friday’s finals results at the OSAA State Wrestling Championships, Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum, Portland: 4A – 120 – Tyson Forbes (M) 4th; 144 – Wyatt Smith (NB) 4th; 175 – Aryan Wright (M) 5th. Sweet Home won the team title with 285-points. Crook Co. was second with 230.5. Marshfield was tenth (61.5), and North Bend 20th (24.5). 3A – 157 – Cameron Houston (Coq/Ban) 2nd; 175 – Riley Jones (Coq/Ban) 3rd; 190 – Dayne Muller (Siu) 3rd; 215 – Tommy Vigue (Coq/Ban) 5th. Harrisburg won the championship with 285-points, Burns second with 155. Coquille/Bandon was eighth (55) and Siuslaw 14th (38). 2A/1A – 285 – Logan Clayburn (MP) 1st. Toledo took first in the 2A/1A team race with 138-pts. To Willamina with 121.5. Myrtle Pt. was 14th (32 pts), & Gold Beach & Reedsport tied for 30th (6pts). The 4A/3A/2A/1A Girls’ team championship went to La Grande with 102 pts, followed by Harrisburg with 80. Siuslaw was tenth (46), North Bend 28th (11), & Brookings-Harbor 31st (10). Individually: 110 – Macali Lade, (Siu) 2nd. 155 – Kaylianna Mazzucchi (NB) 4th; Jane Lacouture (Siu) 2nd.

North Bend fell in a 4A prep girls’ basketball “Play-In” game at St. Helens Saturday, 49-35. The Bulldogs finish the season at 16-10. Marshfield’s girls won a tune-up game for the upcoming 4A state basketball playoffs with a 44-37 win over No. 5 Klamath Union on a neutral court at Grants Pass HS Friday in Southern Oregon. The eighth-seeded Lady Pirates (15-10), winners of District 4, will open the playoffs at home Saturday, March 2, at 4p, against ninth-seeded Stayton (18-4). The winner will advance to the 4A OSAA State Tournament, March 7-9 at Forest Grove HS. Marshfield’s boys won a “Play-In” playoff game, 53-50 over visiting Pendleton Saturday afternoon at Coos Bay. The 12th seeded Pirates (14-10) advance to the Round of 16 and will play March 1st at fifth-seed Philomath (18-6). Coquille’s girls lost in the second round of the 3A playoffs Saturday night at Creswell 61-41. Red Devils finish the season at 23-4. Bandon’s girls (25-2) beat visiting Santiam 62-24 Saturday and will enter the 2A tournament at Pendleton Feb. 29-Mar 2 as the No. 2 seed and open against the No. 10 seed Oakridge (20-8), Feb. 29, 8:15p.

The OSAA 3A Boys’ Basketball eight-team State Tournament bracket is all set following prep games Friday and Saturday from around the state. The State Championships will be held in the Bay Area Feb. 29 – March 2. First round games for the boys at North Bend HS have: Eighth-seed Neah-Kah-Nie (19-5) vs. Top seed Westside Christian (215), 1:30p; 13th-seed Burns (19-9) vs. fifth-seed Harrisburg (21-5) 3:15p. In the bottom portion of the bracket: Sixth-seed Cascade Christian (21-7) vs. third-seeded De La Salle North Catholic (18-7) 6:30p; and, seventh-seed Dayton (20-6) vs. second-seed Valley Catholic (20-6) 8:15p. 3A Girls at Marshfield HS: Thursday 1st Round games: Eighth-seed Westside Christian (20-5) vs. top-seed Corbett (24-0) 1:30p; Fifth-seed Banks (19-6) vs. fourth-seed Vale (23-2) 3:15p; Bottom portion of the bracket: Eleventh-seed Nyssa (18-9) vs. third-seeded Amity (22-3) 6:30p; Seventh-seed Creswell (20-7) vs. second-seed Sutherlin (24-2) 8:15p. Championship games will be played Saturday night at Marshfield. Tickets to the tournament can be found at www.osaa.org.
