Both of Marshfield’s prep basketball teams lost First Round playoff games and failed to advance to the OSAA 4A Tournament at Forest Grove HS, March 7-9. The boys were on the road to Philomath Friday and lost to the Warriors 49-37. Pirates finish the 2023-24 season at 14-11. Marshfield’s girls lost Saturday at home to visiting Stayton 50-28. The Lady Pirates finish 15-11.
Bandon Second at 2A State
Bandon’s girls’ basketball team won their first two games at the OSAA 2A State Tournament at Pendleton, but the Tigers fell in the championship tilt Saturday night between No. 1 Western Christian (Salem) and No. 2 Bandon, 45-40. In the quarter-final round Thursday, the Tigers beat Oakridge 34-23. In the semi-finals Friday, Bandon nearly doubled up on Regis (Stayton), 43-21. Western Christian was the 2A’s top-ranked team and finished 30-1. The Tigers finish the 2023-24 prep season 27-3.
OSAA 3A BXB Tournament
Three days of championship basketball ended Saturday night at Marshfield High School for the OSAA’s 3A girl’s teams. The championship game came down to No. 3 Amity and No. 1 Corbett. The Cardinals, behind the Schimel sisters, won the championship 77-51 over Amity. Senior Ally Schimel set a tournament record with eight 3-pointers and 42-points, while her younger sister Lilly put in six 3-pointers and 30-points. In all, Corbett had 15 threes for a single-game tournament record. Vale won third place over Sutherlin 49-26, and Banks took fourth, 44-37 over Creswell. In the boys’ tournament, Cascade Christian (Medford) beat Western Christian (Tigard) 78-59 for the Challengers’ third-straight state championship. Valley Catholic (Beaverton) took third, 40-37 over Harrisburg, and De La Salle North Catholic (Portland) won fourth place, 64-32 over Burns.
