On Friday, October 13, 2023, at 8:44 p.m., the Oregon State Police responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on Interstate 5, near milepost 263, in Marion County. The preliminary investigation indicated a southbound Honda CRV, operated by Michael James Stevenson (45) of Salem, struck a pedestrian, Arnulfo Acosta Chavez (52) Aurora, who was crossing the interstate. The pedestrian (Chavez) was declared deceased at the scene. The Honda operator (Michael Stevenson) and passenger, Laura Ann Stevenson (53) of Salem, suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The vehicle operator remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. OSP was assisted by the Woodburn Fire and ODOT.
