Beavers in MLB All-Star Game, July 18

OSU release – ARLINGTON, Texas – Steven Kwan and Adley Rutschman joined exclusive MLB All-Star company Tuesday when they both started for the American League. The duo became just the second set of collegiate teammates to appear in the same starting lineup at an All-Star Game. The first was USC’s Fred Lynn and Roy Smalley, who lettered for the Trojans in 1972 and 1973 and played in the 1979 All-Star Game in Seattle, Wash. Oregon State, meanwhile, became just the seventh program in NCAA history to have at least two alums start for the same league in an All-Star Game. The Beavers joined LSU (DJ LeMahieu and Alex Bregman, 2019), Georgia Tech (Jason Varitek and Mark Teixeira, 2005), Florida A&M (Andre Dawson and Vince Coleman, 1988), Minnesota (Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor and Terry Steinbach, 1988), San Diego State (Graig Nettles and Tony Gwynn, 1985) and USC in 1979. Pretty exclusive company, to say the least. Kwan, making his first All-Star game appearance, went 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored as he led off and played left field for the American League. He was part of a three-run third for the AL as his squad eventually walked away with a 5-3 win. Rutschman, meanwhile, started at catcher and batted in the No. 8 spot, going 0-for-2. He was making his second All-Star appearance, and first as a starter. Kwan lettered for the Beavers from 2016-18, while Rutschman was at OSU from 2017-19, giving the duo a two-year overlap in Corvallis. Kwan was a fifth-round selection in the 2018 MLB Draft by Cleveland. Rutschman was the first overall selection in the 2019 draft by Baltimore.
