In Custody Death, Roseburg, Aug. 30

ROSEBURG, Ore. – A Roseburg man has died while in custody at the Douglas County Jail. On Friday, August 25, 2023, at approximately 1:56 p.m., a male adult in custody (AIC) was found unresponsive in his cell in the Douglas County Jail. Deputies summoned emergency services and attempted lifesaving efforts. Despite this, medical personnel declared the AIC, identified as 35-year-old James Thomas Dietlin of Roseburg deceased. Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin requested the assistance of the Roseburg Police Department, an outside agency, to investigate the circumstances of the death. An autopsy was conducted on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office in Clackamas, Oregon. The results of the autopsy are pending additional test results. The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office noted there were no indications of foul play. Any further information will be released by the Roseburg Police Department.
