It was not the military-type of flyover one would normally see on the Oregon Coast. Several hundred residents on the Central Coast were scratching their heads and wondering loudly what was up, literally, with the flyover Tuesday, June 20th, about 1:45 p.m. at Newport. To most, it looked like the large aircraft was headed for the Newport Municipal Airport with its landing gears down; however, it didn’t and did another lap over the Lincoln County Seat at a guesstimated altitude of about 500-feet. An official at the airport said the four-engine jet plane was a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III from McChord Air Force Base in Washington. The Air Force did confirm that the plane was conducting practice approaches to the airport.
